Tips for Horse Training
Horse training is extremely important whether you are seeking to compete with your horse or simply want a companion animal for pleasure riding. The first consideration is when to start your horse. Starting your horse refers to starting them off with a saddle. The premium time to do this is between two and four years of age. This depends on how fast your breed of horse matures and how you feel about your particular horse. The Lipizzaner, for example, is a breed that is slow to mature and should not be started until they are at least four. You will also want to think about your horse's maturity when it comes to the length of training sessions. Twenty minutes is sufficient for a very young horse while an hour may be best for an older horse.
Regular training is a must but you don't want to overdo it. Train on a scheduled basis and choose a time when you and your horse are calm and content. Start off simply walking your horse. A flat, grassy area is a must. You don't want to work your horse in a sand ring or on a hilly area, at least not until they are substantially older. Another factor when training your horse is rapport. You want to communicate with your horse and maintain a positive relationship. Many horses are sensitive and respond poorly to sharp commands. Gentle yet firm is a good way to behave with your horse.
It is important to establish yourself as the leader. Coax your horse to come to you rather than going to him. When your horse responds correctly to your verbal commands reward him with praise and/or a small treat. Always wear proper clothing when training your horse. A helmet, long pants to protect your legs and a good pair of riding boots are crucial. Also, make sure you are familiar with the personality of your horse and understand what, if anything, upsets your horse.
You can learn more tips for horse training online and from books. There are many titles at your local bookstore and/or library that can give you a solid background. Here are a few books that you may want to consider: Basic Training for Horses by Gaydell M. Collier, Storey's Guide to Training Horses by Heather Smith Thomas and Groundwork Training for Your Horse by Lesley Bayley. In the area where you locate these books you will find more titles that can teach you a lot about properly training your horse.
