What You Should Know about Horse Tack
Horse tack is the term used to describe any of the accessories used for horseback riding. Saddles, reins, bridles and bits are several examples. If you are new to the world of horseback riding you will need to learn about these accessories. Let's start off with a very important item -- the saddle. There are two basic types of saddles which are English and stock. You may also hear stock referred to as the Western saddle. The English saddle is used by riders around the world rather than being confined to a particular geographic area.
The English saddle is the type of saddle used for equestrian events. You will find this saddle used for hunting, jumping, dressage, horse racing and more. This saddle is quite flat in design and does not have a horn as the Western or stock saddle does. There are also panels filled with foam or air on the underside of the saddle. The Western or stock saddle, on the other hand, is designed for ranch work. This type of saddle features a horn and offers no padding. It must be worn along with a saddle blanket. The Western saddle is often used for competitive western type riding events like cattle roping.
The bridle is the piece of equipment that contains the bit and the reins. You can buy bridle parts or a full bridle. Bridles come in various styles and designs. The comfort and fit of the bridle is of paramount importance. An ill-fitting bridle can be uncomfortable to your horse. The browband goes across the forehead, while the noseband goes across the nose. The cheekpiece serves as a go-between for the reins and the bit. The throatlatch is a piece that keeps the horse from removing the bridle by rubbing. All of these pieces should be fit to your horse. All horses are different and may not wear the same size or type of bridle.
When shopping for horse tack one great place to start is the Internet. Thanks to the thriving world of ecommerce, you can find a great variety of horse related equipment online. Even Ebay is a good place to shop for new and/or pre-owned horse supplies. You may be able to find items online that are not available at your local equestrian specialty store, if in fact you have one in your area. Just make sure there is a return policy on the items you choose just in case they do not work for you or your horse.
