A Brief Primer on Horse Racing -- The Sport of Kings
Horse racing is known as the sport of kings and is a big moneymaker for many people. The first races took place in the young American colonies on grass before being held on official race tracks. The Jockey Club dates all the way back to the 18th century. As the years passed the sport evolved into the booming business it is today. There are many races around the world with the most famous being the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and the Preakness. There are famous races, and there are famous horses. Two of the most famous racing horses of all time are Seabiscuit and Secretariat.
The most common breeds used for racing are Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Thoroughbreds are considered hot blooded horses that are bred for the very purpose of racing. Every Thoroughbred has Arabian blood and can be traced back to one of nine original sires. These horses are regal and fast, and make excellent racehorses. Quarter Horses are better suited to short distance races. Their name comes from the quarter-mile races they excel at. You will find some horses have Arabian, Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred blood. Breeders practice selective breeding to produce foals with certain characteristics.
Most racehorses are born in January. This gives them an advantage in their age group when shown in equestrian and horse shows. Many Thoroughbreds are introduced to the track as early as two years of age, which many animal advocates feel is too soon. The bones are not as strong as they could be at that age and accidents can occur. Even in adult horses, accidents can happen. Racing is a treacherous pursuit for both the horses and the jockeys that ride them.
Not that it stops anyone. Horse racing is an extremely popular sport and contributes to the economy as many people have jobs and make money because of it. As far as betting is concerned, there are three different kinds of bets. Win, place, or show. Bet to win pays the most and is self explanatory. Bet to place means your horse is either first or second, while bet to show means your horse is in the top three. When betting, you can win a little money, a lot of money or none at all. Like all wagers, this pursuit carries financial risk.
