What You Should Know about the Nordlands Horse

The Nordlands horse, as its name suggests, hails from Norway. This horse is also commonly known as the Lofoten horse. The breed almost went extinct half a century ago, but has experienced a resurgence. There are currently only a couple thousand Lofotens in the world today. Many horse enthusiasts simply don't know about them, and if they did, they might decide to give this majestic and beautiful equine a chance. Many people consider this breed of horse a large pony. It is native to Norway and is the country's smallest native breed.

This horse is made for cold, harsh conditions. Originally a draft horse, many of the jobs originally done by these horses is now done by machines and vehicles. Today this breed of horse is used as a companion horse and a carriage pulling horse. This breed is rather small when compared to other horses but can carry a substantial amount of weight. The first thing you will notice about these horses is their ruggedness. The neck is straight and heavy, the mane and tail thick and dense. The legs feature very little feathering and are not overly muscular. These horses are great trotting ponies and have a distinctive gait.

You will find the Lofoten in a variety of colors. These colors may include chestnut, palomino, bay, black, gray and more. These horses are rare and you will be lucky to find a breeder outside of Norway. If you want to breed this horse yourself, you will need a sire and a dam. The stallion is the sire and the mare is the dam. The gestation period for horses is about 11months. You should educate yourself on the pursuit of horse breeding before deciding whether or not it is right for you.

The Internet is a great resource for learning more about horse breeding. You will find some information about the Nordlands horse but nowhere near as much as you will find about other breeds. There are also plenty of books about horse breeding. A few titles to get you started are as follows: Modern Horse Breeding: A Guide for Owners by Susan McBane, The Complete Guide for Horse Business Success by Janet E. English and Your First Foal: Breeding for Beginners by Karin Kattwinkle.
